Technology in Communication Careers--Editor
I was in the fortunate position of working at a small publishing company that was in the process of transitioning to more technological and efficient processes. I say fortunate because it helped me gain perspective on how technology has impacted this specific career. I was able to see how things were before and how things were after the changes were implemented. For example, routing book covers and manuscripts for first pass checks and final pass checks used to me carting a folder full of paper or a thick manuscript across the office to the next stop on the checklist. Slowly, we started to implement a digital routing process for this, meaning we would review on screen, click a button to indicate that we were done and send it on to the next person.
This also applies to the way that publishers communicate with their readers. "When used well, digital helps amplify good content. It brings in new subscribers, especially a younger audience, and promotes the publication" (Staff, 2017). Marketing to readers is an interesting process. Authors have social media accounts and even publishing companies have social media accounts. The common thing there is that both parties have a similar interest: promote the book. In that sense, both parties are a business and can benefit from an additional way to reach their target market.
The industry is still evolving as well. Things are moving forward into the future and trends come and go. People want quick, easy, and cheap in this industry. Author, Sloane Crosley talks about how technology has affected the publishing industry and new trends coming this way.
