Instant Gratification

Image
The world is at your fingertips. In 2018, you can have your groceries delivered to your doorstep within a few hours, you don't have to leave your couch to order the next book in a series you're dying to read. You can find out who that actor is in the movie you're watching (you know you know him, you just can't place him) by just pulling out you phone and doing a quick search. "Millennials are over exposed to dopamine through the use of social media" (Divnomics, 2017). You live for instant gratification even if you don't realize it. If you didn't have access to all of these things, your whole world would be different. You can just ask Siri. It plays into Netflix  and how we view television. You don't have to wait anymore. You get all episodes immediately. Even movies. "Facing increased competition from all sorts of entertainment options, movie studios are finally about to start letting their films appear on DVD and in digital formats not ...

"Bingeing"

With the introduction of Netflix, television watching has not been the same. What was once an experience is now a black hole of drama, comedy, or intrigue. Let me explain. When I was younger, the way we watched TV was as followed: Eagerly await your favorite night of the week because it means a new episode of your favorite show is on. Sit down on that night exactly at the time of premiere in order not to miss the opening. Make sure you have popcorn and other TV-watching snacks ready to go.  Avoid having to get up and use the bathroom in the middle of an episode. Use the very small commercial window to dash to the bathroom and go before the episode returns.  Repeat steps 1-3 every week until the season finale. Impatiently await the return of your show throughout the summer months, speculating in your head just exactly where that cliff hanger will go when the show returns.  How society watches TV now:  Choose a show on Netflix and watch for eight to ...

Social Media

Image
Social media has changed our culture in a big way. Yes, of course everyone is staring at their phones as they walk. Yes, of course people are paying more attention to digital conversation over the actual conversation happening. Yes, of course more people are aware of what's going on in Kim Kardashian's life than what's going on in their own country . But what I'm talking about is how social media has influenced society through commercialism. It's changed marketing tactics for so many companies and encouraged a materialistic society more than ever. If you think about it, the amount of influencers that sell us products on any given day, you would see that my assumption of how this form of mass media influenced society is correct. " Influencers are the golden children of marketing strategies right now" (Weinswig, 2016). Go look in your pantry, your makeup bag, your closet, your car...is there anything in there purchased because someone you admire and re...

Technology in Communication Careers--Copywriter

The current position I hold now is a copywriter for an advertising agency. Unlike my experience in publishing, I didn't get to see the transition to incorporating technology into this career. Eight months ago I came into this job, and learned how technology played a role in my job. For example, ProofHQ is our routing system for jobs. It goes through the whole team and allows everyone to digitally review and make changes to a project. I do hear stories, however, of the old days when there were "job bags" where the routing was a physical route and all versions of the project were lugged around from person to person. It definitely prevents us from getting up and walking a bit more but it does make things more efficient. The pieces I work on also have to be submitted for legal review to make sure that the content is not making any over-promises or inaccurate. So, in order to do that, there's a whole online system where we submit the document and then tag all of the ann...

Technology in Communication Careers--Influencer

Image
A new job that's emerged in this digital age  is being an influencer. "Influencer marketing is generating a mammoth return for companies by connecting brands to individuals in a personal and powerful way" (Eyal, 2017). This is a job where an individual runs a social media account in a specific are like health and wellness, fashion, or beauty and they post about their lifestyle, about products they use, and often give advice on things specific to their specialty. It's a very communication-based career. Influencers are communicating with brands and their target audience. This happens a lot on Instagram. Between the Insta stories and images, there's a lot of room to promote a specific lifestyle. For example, I follow a lot of healthy living Instagrammers and I've been known to buy far too many products they recommend. In fact, just this morning I saw an Instagram post talking about eggs cooked in a specific ghee: Fourth and Heart's White Truffle ghee. It took...

Technology in Communication Careers--Editor

I was in the fortunate position of working at a small publishing company that was in the process of transitioning to more technological and efficient processes. I say fortunate because it helped me gain perspective on how technology has impacted this specific career. I was able to see how things were before and how things were after the changes were implemented. For example, routing book covers and manuscripts for first pass checks and final pass checks used to me carting a folder full of paper or a thick manuscript across the office to the next stop on the checklist. Slowly, we started to implement a digital routing process for this, meaning we would review on screen, click a button to indicate that we were done and send it on to the next person. This also applies to the way that publishers communicate with their readers. "When used well, digital helps amplify good content. It brings in new subscribers, especially a younger audience, and promotes the publication" (Staff, 2...
